I often read in A.M. Costa Rica how many people feel Costa Rica has become an expensive place to live. And that may well be so, depending on where in the world one is drawing a comparison.

My wife and I happen to provide a perfect real-time laboratory of an expense comparison. Every year we split our time almost exactly 50/50 between two very beautiful parts of the world; our house about an hour outside San Francisco, California, and our house on the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. In California our 1,500-square foot house sits on a 1/3 acre lot nestled in the redwoods. We have two cars in California, both more than 10 years old. In Costa Rica our 2,700-square foot house sits on a 5-acre lot overlooking the Pacific Ocean. We also have two older vehicles in Costa Rica, both 4WD of necessity.

I just analyzed our living expenses in selected categories going back over five years. Of the total in each expense category I computed the percentage spent in California vs. the percentage spent in Costa Rica. The table below lists the result

Given the increasing commercial development in Perz Zeledon, the need for more space had became obvious.  It therefore, has extended it’s growth and development to areas of Palmares.

The growth there has increased dramatically in recent years, with the creation of shopping malls,  supermarkets, large warehouses and all sorts of stores and  banks making it unnecessary to come to downtown Perez Zeledón for service.  A nice little Pueblo and a nice benefit is the cost of living is held intact.

Being located on Inter-American Highway makes it an ideal place for a development because it is a crossing point for travelers who go to the  border with Panama and other countries. The palmares area until a few years ago was a rural place where the  principal activity was the agriculture and the cattle farming. All of this has changed. The land that was used for this activity i snow being used for industrial and development.

This has made Perez Zeledon into a small capital for the south region of our country, where you can do almost everything with out having to travel to San Jose. Thanks to the extension of trade and to the all the big companies such as the  Coca Cola, Dos Pinos , La Cerveceria and Codesur have located their  companies in the area of the Palmares.  All of these contribute to make palmares an serious growth area.

Linking quepos and Dominal – a reality

I have lived in the southern zone for many years and often heard the rumors associated with the building of the new road between Dominical and Quepos.  In The last two years we have witnessed the reality of this road and now finally, the asphalt will go down.  President Óscar Arias Sánchez was in the area over the weekend and gave the symbolic go ahead to the final stage of the highway.  He also inaugurated a new bridge over the Río Naranjo between Savegre and Quepos. This is the fourth new bridge installed on this route.

Costa Rica Land Development, Tourism and general transportation will feel the immediate impact of this. The time will be reduced from 1 hour and 45 minutes to 35 minutes to arrive at Dominical from Quepos.  The new Bridge at Naranjo will impact greatly on travel time to the area as well. It was usually a wait of at least 15 minutes and often 30 minutes.

The 1,000,000 plus Tourists of Manuel Antonio have been held hostage for years due to the quality of this road and now will welcome the opportunity to visit the friendly, green area of the southern zone where mountains reach down to the sea.

The highway has been unmaintained gravel for years and a source of local air pollution as well had serious washout problems during the rainy season.
Officials now look to the work being finished in October, weather permitting.

 The Río Naranjo bridge is costing $2.8 million, and it is 198 meters (about 650 feet). The concrete beams are 56 meters (184 feet), the longest of any bridge in Central America. The other three bridges span the Rios Paquita, Portalón and Matapalo. Three more bridges are in construction.

This new opportunity with the access and Costa Rica’s southern zone land prices that are deeply discounted, it is going foster anew boom for Real Estate development in Costa Rica. The area is so rich with with amenities for the nature lover and city slicker alike.
